I painted “The Derby” a while ago after spotting a real character wearing a red footy scarf and a blue woolly hat, with his little dog behind the wigwam. He was rolling a ciggie and reminiscing about football commentaries from years gone by.
He really stuck in my mind, so I decided to write a poem about him. This painting is inspired by that chance encounter and the characters you meet in everyday life.
